In the middle of March 1915, the 6th London battalion landed in France as part of 4 Brigade, 2nd London Division. They then joined 6 Brigade, 2nd Division for trench instruction under 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps in the trenches opposite Cuinchy and the notorious “Brickfields”. On 19th April, after ten days training at Raimbert, 6th London entered the line at Givenchy for the first time as a unit, relieving 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps. During their four days here the Germans blew two mines and fired a number of Minenwerfers (large trench mortars) which breached the breastworks of 6th London’s trenches. William Clark was killed on 20th April when his trench was hit by one of these mortars. |
